Dr. Bathurst (BSc., MSc., Ph.D. 1986 Queen's) is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada where he has taught since 1980. He also holds a cross-appointment with the Civil Engineering Department at Queen's University. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo and Ryerson University (Canada) and Edith Cowan University in Australia. He was visiting Distinguished Scientist at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2013-14. He was the recipient of a prestigious 2009 JSPS Invitation Fellowship from Japan and currently holds an appointment as Visiting Research Fellow at the Port and Airport Research Institute in Japan (2016-2026).

Dr. Bathurst is Past-President of the North American Geosynthetics Society, International Geosynthetics Society, Canadian Geotechnical Society and the Engineering Institute of Canada. He has authored or co-authored more than 220 papers in refereed journals (including the journal Nature), 20 book chapters and more than 250 contributions in conference proceedings.

Dr. Bathurst has made fundamental contributions to the areas of reinforcement geosynthetics, granular particle mechanics, railway ballast, transparent surrogate granular soils and numerical modelling of reinforced embankments and walls. His contributions also include themes related to earthquake geotechnical engineering, probabilistic design, instrumentation and testing of full-scale reinforced soil walls and embankments, geosynthetic materials testing and modelling, sustainability and soil-structure interaction. His work on mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls has led to fundamental changes to the authoritative AASHTO LRFD building code in the US. His contributions are heavily cited in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) and the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual (CFEM).

Current research activities are focused on the use of geosynthetic and metallic reinforcement in earth retaining wall systems, limit states design, probabilistic design of reinforced and unreinforced soil structures, and load and resistance factor design (LRFD) calibration. Dr. Bathurst has served on committees of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and the National Building Code of Canada, and AASHTO in the US. Dr. Bathurst is Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed technical journal Geosynthetics International which is an official journal of the International Geosynthetics Society and published by ICE/Thomas Telford, an Associate Editor of the ASCE International Journal of Geomechanics and an Associate Editor of the technical journal Geotextiles and Geomembranes which is also an official journal of the International Geosynthetics Society.

He has received best paper awards for contributions to peer-reviewed technical journals including: 2021 ASCE Geo-Institute Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award; 2013 ASTM Hogentogler Award; R.M. He has delivered more that 50 keynotes, invited lectures, courses and webinars in Canada and internationally.

In recognition of his technical contributions he was the recipient of: 2016 Legget Medal of the Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) (senior award of the CGS); 2015 Meyerhof Award (CGS); 2002 Geosynthetics Division Award; 2003 CGS Cross-Country Lecture; and the IGS Gold Medal Award (now called the IGS Technical Award) in 2023, 2010, 1998 and 1994, which is the highest technical award of the IGS. He was awarded the 2024 Julian C. Smith Medal of the EIC "For achievement in the development of Canada".

In 2021 Dr. Bathurst was awarded the IGS "Bathurst Lecture" in recognition of his contributions in the area of soil reinforcement. The lecture is to be delivered by a suitably qualified expert commencing at the 12th International Conference on Geosynthetics (ICG) in Rome in September 2023, and every four years thereafter.
